If you’re struggling with finding your unique style start by following the few simple steps listed here until you feel confident and adventurous enough to venture outside your comfort zone:
Find out what body type you have (by measuring yourself and referring to the chart in Chapter One in Your Body, Your Style). Look for what suits your body type and what silhouettes you should avoid.
Mix and experiment with patterns, keeping it simple at first by combining minimalist, high-quality clothes in enduring colors.
Have basics and essentials in your wardrobe that you can dress up or dress down. These are your basic camisoles, shirts, skirts, and pants.
When mixing colors stick to trusted combinations such as black and white, navy and white, cream and caramel.
Wear dresses. Adding simple shift dresses in good fabrics to your wardrobe means you only need to worry about one garment and there is no need to mix and match. Dress it up with simple jewelry or a belt that will always make you look stylish.
Add accessories to your wardrobe. Your clothes can be easily transformed with the right accessories. Keep them simple and minimalistic at first.
Pay attention to grooming. Having well-manicured nails and a good haircut always elevates your style.
Wear clothes that fit your personality, ones that suit you and make you feel more confident.
Start adding your signature to every outfit. This could be the way you wear your scarf, a hat, belt, or jewelry.
Pay attention to what fashion you are drawn to by observing people around you, or referring to ads in fashion magazines. This will allow you to experiment more and find out what works for you and what doesn’t. Keep a scrapbook or pin the styles that inspire you. Whenever you see others wearing clothes you like and admire try to get a picture and paste it on your Pinterest board.
What comfort level important to you? Which cut and silhouette appeals to you? Do you like timeless or trendy, prints or solids? After a while, you will see a pattern developing of the kind of styles that you like.
Over time you will realize that you have acquired a way of dressing that resonates with your personality, that you feel good in, and that boosts your self-confidence. Once you’ve identified the components of your style, only follow the latest trends that fit your style, and develop it until you have mastered your unique look.
You will now realize that you are making fewer buying mistakes, that you feel more at ease around people and your environment, that you are able to communicate with more confidence, and that you start to give a clear message to others about who you are through your clothes and your personal style.
